Janet Street-Porter, the ebullient former head of Live TV, has emerged

as a surprise candidate for the top public affairs job at British

Airways.

According to sources close to BA, Street-Porter is on a shortlist for

the position - thought to have a salary of pounds 150,000 and a seat on

the BA board - alongside acting head of public affairs Peter Jones.

BA’s chief executive Bob Ayling, who is masterminding the company’s PR

shake-up, has been using headhunters to find a suitable candidate to

head BA’s internal communications and PR departments, which merged in

January.

He is known to have met with Princess Diana’s media adviser Jane

Atkinson last year to discuss the job but talks went no further.

Jones was made acting head in January but one insider said he had done a

tremendous job and was now the most likely candidate.

Although Street-Porter is not a PR specialist, she is thought to have

been recommended by headhunters because of her knowledge of the

broadcast media.

PR Week was unable to contact Street-Porter before going to press and BA

declined to comment.
