PUBLIC SECTOR: Lambeth Council up for an image change

Arguably the greatest challenge in local government, and certainly one of the highest profile jobs around, has arisen at Lambeth Council. The south London council formerly known for the excesses of the ’loony Left’ is looking for its first communications director to take charge of rebranding the council and managing its entire image. Following the elections last May, in which Labour secured a majority in the previously hung council, a strategic review of the communications operation was held by consultant Graham Taylor. The four-month review concluded that a heavyweight player was needed to position Lambeth as a leading light in local government. Chief executive Heather Rabbatts said: ’Jobs like this don’t come up everyday.’ Rabbatts confirmed that Lambeth was keen to recruit from outside the traditional local government arena.
