Diary: Wedding bans on publicity as PR manager fails to get an aisle seat

Most hacks are happy with getting a free holiday and some hotel bubble bath from a press trip, but not Guardian political correspondent Rebecca Smithers and picture editor Eamonn McCabe.

On their Le Meridien Holidays beano to Manhattan last week, along with

taking in an off-Broadway show and dinner in SoHo, they managed to cram in

a quick trip to New York City Hall - emerging as man and wife.

Yasmin Sethna, public relations manager for Le Meridien, tells me that

this particular media event had no pre-publicity.

’We were on the way back to the airport in the limo,’ she confides. ’When

Rebecca said: ’Eamonn and I got married this afternoon,’ we all squealed

and broke open a bottle of champagne. Luckily we had some ice in the

limo.

’She’d had no pre-warning, either. We teased her about doing it on the

cheap: they bought their rings at Tiffany’s but she took her flowers out

of a vase in the hotel room.’
