Westminster Strategy lobbies for Organon

Organon, the firm which manufactures two of the female contraceptives

at the centre of the 1995 pill scare, has hired Westminster Strategy to

help improve the image of its pills.

The agency signed the contract for the new account last week and will be

retained on a permanent basis for fees thought to total pounds 60,000 a

year.

Organon has argued that the Tory government mishandled the pill scare,

which involved ’third generation’ pills. The company produces two third

generation pills, Marvelon and Mercilon.

Two years ago the government authorised a letter from the Committee on the

Safety of Medicines warning GPs there were risks involved in these

pills.

WS director Claire Weaver said: ’Organon has asked us to to persuade the

Government that the letter was flawed in the advice it gave, and that they

should issue a different letter of advice to reflect the fact that the

third generation pill is the safest pill.’

Organon will use Westminster Strategy for advice on forthcoming issues

like infertility, the introduction of charges for the pill, contraceptive

implants and a new drug to help schizophrenia.
