Organon, the firm which manufactures two of the female contraceptives
at the centre of the 1995 pill scare, has hired Westminster Strategy to
help improve the image of its pills.
The agency signed the contract for the new account last week and will be
retained on a permanent basis for fees thought to total pounds 60,000 a
Organon has argued that the Tory government mishandled the pill scare,
which involved ’third generation’ pills. The company produces two third
generation pills, Marvelon and Mercilon.
Two years ago the government authorised a letter from the Committee on the
Safety of Medicines warning GPs there were risks involved in these
WS director Claire Weaver said: ’Organon has asked us to to persuade the
Government that the letter was flawed in the advice it gave, and that they
should issue a different letter of advice to reflect the fact that the
third generation pill is the safest pill.’
Organon will use Westminster Strategy for advice on forthcoming issues
like infertility, the introduction of charges for the pill, contraceptive
implants and a new drug to help schizophrenia.
