Are you bothered by journalists badgering you at all hours of the day?
Eurotunnel PR boss Dominic Fry has the answer.
He was attending a friend’s wedding recently when his bleeper went off
during the crucial exchange of vows. Luckily it was in what he describes
tactfully as ‘vibrator mode’.
Fry reluctantly ducked out of the church and made for the nearest phone
box.
The caller turned out to be a journalist from the BBC who had received
angry calls from punters waiting for the delayed Le Shuttle and was
demanding answers.
Fry listened to talk of disaster and Eurotunnel cock-ups without
uttering a word and then held the phone up to the peal of bells coming
from the church. ‘Oh my God, I’m sorry, it’s not your wedding is it?’
said the horrified hack.
A bemused Fry asked the caller to repeat the question, but she seemed to
have temporarily forgotten her line of inquiry. ‘It doesn’t matter,’ she
said hastily and rang off.
Fry is convinced the idea has marketing potential. ‘You could make tapes
of church bells, ambulance sirens or passionate lovemaking to disconcert
even the most seasoned journalist.’
