Palace tipped to ask for tenders

Buckingham Palace may issue competitive tenders for PR agencies to

handle communications for the Royal family following a change in its PR

funding arrangements announced last week.

The Central Office of Information will no longer administer the Palace’s

pounds 471,000 annual communications budget, but will hand the funds

directly to Royal communications officials, who will administer the

budget and publish their accounts in an annual report which will be

available for parliamentary scrutiny.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Household said: ’This will mean greater

transparency and more direct control over the budget. We hope to get

better value for money. There is a possibility of looking at competitive

tenders.’

The communications budget covers PR support for visits by the Royal

family, the electronic distribution of press releases, the Royal web

site and press summaries for members of the Royal family.
