Bell Pottinger Communications has bought sports PR and marketing
agency Michael Humphreys and Partners for an undisclosed fee.
Michael Humphreys provides services including press relations,
sponsorship negotiation and event organisation for clients such as the
Amateur Swimming Association, the World Professional Billiards and
Snooker Association, Coca-Cola, Nike UK, Texaco and British Sky
The company has already co-operated with Bell Pottinger agencies on
corporate PR work for the Rugby Football Union, the sport’s governing
body in England and on a lobbying project for ENIC, the investment trust
which has stakes in four European football clubs (PR Week 12 June).
Michael Humphreys, who will retain his position as chairman of the
sports agency after the purchase and will receive a 50 per cent share of
future profits over five years, said: ’After 15 years the time is right
for us to gain better resources and clout to compete in the European
market.’ He added: ’Michael Humphreys and Partners remains in its
current offices, with the existing staff, and retains its name.’
Humphreys founded his London-based agency in 1983 with one other member
of staff. It now employs 18 staff and had a turnover of pounds 1.5
million in the last financial year.
Bell Pottinger is understood to be keen to increase its sports PR
It already has several sports clients on its books, including Wimbledon,
the English and Wales Cricket Board, the British Horseracing Board and
the Football League.
Last October, marketing services group WPP acquired a sizeable stake in
Chime Communications, Bell Pottinger’s holding company, thereby
facilitating Chime’s purchase of advertising agency HHCL and Partners.
