The Duchess of York’s new US-based PR adviser has outlined his aim to
divert the media from her colourful past.
Howard Rubenstein, said: ‘We’ll be advising her on the best way to build
her stature in a positive way. We’ll be focusing on things she’ll be
doing in the future rather than some of the things that have been
written about in the past.’
Rubenstein replaces Fergie’s assistant Kate Waddington as her main
worldwide press contact.
The Duchess is the latest controversial figure to sign with Rubenstein,
one of New York’s most successful and respected PR gurus. Previous
clients include the ‘Queen of Mean’ - tax-evading hotelier Leona
Helmsley, Donald Trump and Mike Tyson.
Rubenstein, 64, is also renowned for his connections with leading
property developers and New York politicians, including former city
mayors Ed Koch and Abe Beame. His Manhattan-based company Rubenstein
Associates, established 42 years ago, now employs more than 140 people.
For more than 20 years, he has represented Rupert Murdoch, whose tabloid
News of the World recently carried revelations from Fergie’s ex-
financial adviser John Bryan about their relationship.
Rubenstein told PR Week that his appointment, yet to be finalised, was
likely to be accompanied by Fergie spending more time in the US.
