Peregrine called in by Gilliat Financial Solutions, Sage brings in Chalk

Sage, the business software and services firm, has handed Chalk its corporate and trade comms account for Sage Pay. The agency, the corporate comms arm of Unity Marketing Group, will look after PR for Sage's online payments protection division.

Gilliat Financial Solutions, a newly launched UK-based structured products specialist, has handed Peregrine Communications its retained PR account. Founded in August by structured products veteran Adrian Neave, Gilliat forms part of AIM-listed Arbuthnot Banking Group.

Spada, the professional services PR consultancy, has promoted Alex Kane to the role of MD. Kane, who initially joined in 1998 as a trainee, will head the consultancy's built environment practice as well as managing the consultancy's team. Gavin Ingham Brooke, who founded Spada 15 years ago, will now become chief executive with overall responsibility for finance, strategic direction and business development.

Maitland has appointed George Trefgarne, the former BP director of media and research, as a senior consultant. He will primarily concentrate on the agency's oil and gas practice and joins in November. He left BP during the summer, having joined the firm in 2006 following a career in journalism.

Mergermarket's M&A league tables for the first three months of the year showed transaction activity at its lowest since 2003. The Q1 to Q3 period saw 6,256 announced deals valued at $1,047.7bn globally. Europe was hardest hit, with M&A down 69 per cent from the same period last year. Brunswick topped the European league table from Finsbury by value, while FD led the way in terms of deal volume with 70, ahead of Brunswick (57) and Citigate Dewe Rogerson (46).
