Westminster City Council has awarded its two-year public affairs

account to The Communication Group following a competitive pitch against

incumbent agency Advocacy.

The agency, which begins work this month, will handle government

relations on issues which include: the Government’s plan for a Greater

London Authority and an elected mayor; strategic spending assessments -

by which Government decides how much money to allocate to councils; the

recent influx of asylum-seekers from central and eastern Europe; the

regulation of advertisements in telephone boxes and the location of

needle exchanges for drug addicts.

As part of a cost-cutting exercise, the council will handle in-house

most of its political monitoring which was previously part of its agency

brief.
