London Transport has named former Midland Bank marketing chief

Geoffrey Ellerton, as its first head of marketing communications.

Ellerton, who was hired following a seven-month search, is being tipped

as a possible future successor for LT marketing director Norman

Cohen.

On arrival at LT on 3 February Ellerton will report to Cohen and head

both public affairs, and advertising and publicity - previously managed

separately.

LT head of public affairs Ivor Godfrey Davies left the company in June

(PR Week, 21 June 1996). Advertising and publicity head Jean Harris quit

two months later.

The remaining managers and their staff - totalling 75 - will now report

to Ellerton. They include media relations manager Philip Carter,

corporate relations head Claire Filby, passenger liaison manager Allen

Wetherell and advertising and promotion manager Charlie Edelman.

Ellerton resigned from Midland Bank after ten years in January last year

’to further his career elsewhere’ although he has stayed out of the

spotlight since then.

At Midland he is credited with helping to form the bank’s ’marketing

communications forum’, formed to review its internal product and

marketing structures.

Cohen, who was appointed marketing director in 1995, has masterminded

LT’s marketing overhaul, designed to improve customer and media

relations.
