The Refugee Council has named National Federation of Housing
Associations PR chief Rachel Rees as its new head of communications.
Rees, 31, resigned this week and will join the council in November on a
salary of around pounds 30,000.
Rees will head a team of 16 based at its London headquarters and will
report to the organisation’s chief executive Nick Hardwick.
Her responsibilities will cover public affairs, fundraising and a
‘research and information’ team who deal with press and public queries.
Rees will also head an international team, currently working on a
project with Bosnian refugees.
The job of head of communications has been handled on a temporary basis
by information and research manager Matthew Gernier since the departure
of Susan Kershaw in May.
The Council has recently been lobbying hard against the Asylum Bill,
which was passed last month, stating that it will restrict refugees’
access to justice and financial entitlements and that it does not allow
them enough time to claim asylum on arrival in the UK.
Rees has headed external affairs at the National Federation of Housing
Associations for the past three years under the title of policy co-
She said it is too early to discuss her replacement at the federation,
which represents 1,500 housing associations across the UK.
