The Geneva-based International Federation of Red Cross and Red

Crescent Societies has appointed a new head of media services.

Jon Valfells has been working as an information officer for the

federation for two years. He replaces Bodine Williams, who left on 20

January.

Valfells’ primary responsibilities will be to continue to raise the

profile of the International Federation and work with the 170 national

societies.

The federation also wants to get involved with the opportunities offered

by the Internet.

’We are planning to create a Red Cross newswire on the Internet,’

Valfells told PR Week.

Valfells’ previous experience at the federation includes going on

international missions and dealing with day to day press enquiries. He

was with Diana, Princess of Wales during her high profile visit to

Angola in January.

Valfells, who was born in Iceland, started his career as a journalist on

the Icelandic national television network.

He spent five years working as a spokesman for the European Free Trade

Association in Brussels, three of those as head of press.

Working with a team of five, Valfells will report to the director of

communications Ian Piper.
