Telecommunications International, the overseas subsidiary of TCI Inc,
one of the world’s largest cable operators, has appointed Catherine May
as its first director of communications.
May, currently PR director at the American cable and phone company, US
West International, takes on the job in the New Year.
She will be based in London and will have responsibility for corporate
issues including public affairs and investor relations. She will also
work overseas on a project basis handling communications for TCI
International ventures in France, Argentina and Japan.
TCI and US West are both shareholders in the cable company Telewest,
which floated on the US and UK stock exchanges last November. The two
rival firms also hold stakes in the listed cable and satellite channel
business Flextech.
US West director of communications Alan Thompson, who is also a non-
executive director of PR agency Larkspur, said he would use May’s
departure to reassess the company’s PR needs.
‘Recruiting another person is a probability, but we may look for other
ways to fill the gap,’ said Thompson.
May said TCI’s decision to create the new post was a reflection of the
group having ‘reached a size where it needed specific communications
resource.’
TCI Inc floated 18 per cent of TCI International on the US Stock
Exchange earlier this year.
West will report to TCI Inc president, Adam Singer.
