Whirlpool, the US white goods giant has appointed Julian Oliver, general
manager of Edelman in Brussels and managing director of its European
public affairs group, as its first European head of communications.
Oliver takes up his post at Whirlpool’s European headquarters near Milan
in early January. His responsibilities will include the whole range of
internal and external communications and regulatory affairs and the co-
ordination of Whirlpool’s PR activities across Europe.
A one-time vice president corporate affairs for American Express Europe,
Oliver ran the company’s now defunct Brussels office for seven years. He
joined Edelman last year (PR Week 18 November, 1994) to launch its
Brussels office - now five strong - although the operation has not been
an unqualified success.
President and chief operating officer of Edelman PR Worldwide, Richard
Edelman, admitted the firm’s growth had been disappointing. Fee income
of dollars 500,000 was, he said, ‘less than we need’.
But he stressed that the agency was committed to developing a business
in Brussels. ‘We’re not doing the usual American thing of cutting and
running. We’re determined to be a public affairs player in Europe.’
