From Our Readers: Industry must change work experience views

Your story on work experience (News, 11 September) raised some alarming figures. While we encourage PR agencies to hire those interested in learning more about the PR industry, these participants should never feel as though they are being exploited.

The CIPR encourages all those considering a career in PR to gain as much practical experience as possible. Work placements provide the entry-level knowledge and skills required to work in the industry, and provide an excellent introduction.

The CIPR has a work placement charter that outlines objectives and expectations that employers and participants should agree on prior to work experience. I ask those in the industry to investigate this charter and look to change their views.
