Ex-Midland Bank head of public affairs Duncan Baker has resurfaced at
his old firm Cable and Wireless.
Baker joined C&W as group brand manager in October, just 18 months after
he stepped down as the telecoms company’s marketing communications
manager.
Baker left Midland in June after less than a year as head of public
affairs (PR Week, 21 June 1996). In that role he led a 38-strong team,
covering media and government relations, public affairs, internal
communications, sponsorship, advertising and events management.
Before taking up the public affairs mantle, Baker spent several months
as senior manager, corporate relations, with HSBC Holdings, Midland
Bank’s parent company.
At C&W - which has just announced the merging of its Mercury business,
with three cable companies, into a huge UK telecoms group - Baker said
he would be investigating possibilities for developing the group’s
global brand.
‘Cable and Wireless is really under-valued as a company because few
people really understand where it operates and what it does,’ he said.
