The British Council is bringing the director of its Hong Kong

office, Tom Buchanan, back to the UK to become the organisation’s first

director of corporate affairs.

Buchanan who will return to the UK in October to spearhead a UK

profile-raising campaign for the Council. It will be the first time that

PR has been represented on its board of management.

The Council is also looking for a head of communications to strengthen

the team.

Nigel Semmens, head of press and public relations, confirmed that a

brief for the post had been put out to an executive search company. The

appointee will report to Buchanan, as will Semmens, who heads up a

department of four.

The Council is a Government body that promotes the English language and

all things British in 109 countries, boasting a worldwide staff in

excess of 6,000 people. However, it is little known at home.

The head of communications will concentrate on corporate design and

building a corporate identity. He or she will also help with internal

and external communications. ’Getting all our 900 UK staff involved and

improving our internal communications will obviously help,’ said

Semmens.
