Hugo Peel, managing director of business-to-business PR firm ABS

Communications is jumping ship to Edelman PR together with two staff and

half of the business.

Peel, who joined ABS in 1986 joins Edelman at Easter as head of its

corporate practice and a member of its senior management team. ABS

account director Emma Bensted and account executive Julia Crawford will

go with him.

Among the clients moving with Peel are Blue Circle Properties, British

Gas Properties, Humberts Leisure and Lend Lease Corporation. In total

they are thought to represent pounds 250,000 in revenue. ABS declared

fee income of pounds 361,724 in 1995 - a 23 per cent increase - on

turnover of pounds 478,840.

Both Peel and ABS chairman Alan Bailey insisted the split was amicable -

the two ran their account groups separately while sharing overheads.

Both, however, retain their holdings in the headhunting firm

Professional Connections.

Bailey said ABS would continue with its remaining three staff and a

client list which includes the Student Support Centre and First

Penthouse. He rejected the idea of selling out to a larger PR firm.

Commenting on the reasons for the move, Peel said ABS was unable to

provide the international network and other resources which Edelman

could. Edelman MD Abel Hadden said the deal provided the agency with

added capability in the professional, property, retail, leisure and

construction sectors
