Abbey National has called on Financial Dynamics for communications

advice on its pounds 1.4 billion takeover bid for mutual insurer

Scottish Amicable.

The agency’s managing director Julian Hanson-Smith was brought on board

last week to assist Abbey National’s in-house corporate affairs team to

devise and maintain a media relations strategy.

In particular, Hanson-Smith is advising on ways of ensuring that Abbey

National’s offer is communicated through the media to ScotAm’s 1.1

million policyholders and contrasted with the demutualisation terms

proposed by Scottish Amicable’s board last month.

Part of Abbey National’s strategy is to delay the despatch of Scottish

Amicable’s proposal document and the vote by members until other offers

have been considered.

Abbey National’s group PR manager Chris Werman stressed that FD had been

recruited on a project basis only and that day-to-day media relations

remained the responsibility of the company’s six-strong press and PR

team.

Last year the agency advised on Abbey National’s pounds 1.3 billion bid

for N&P Building Society.

PR strategy for ScotAm is being handled by The Maitland Consultancy,

which was appointed early last year to advise on its proposed

demutualisation and flotation.
