Courier company UPS has ended its six month search for a director

of PR by appointing Catherine Couplan to the post.

Couplan, who joined the company last week, replaces Annie Garthwaite as

director of PR for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Garthwaite quit

UPS in August after five years in the job shortly before it shifted its

corporate headquarters from London to Brussels (PR Week, 9 August,

1996).

Garthwaite resurfaced in November as head of communications for

insurance group Commercial Union.

Previously PR manager for Arab airline Emirates, Couplan heads a

five-strong department with overall responsibility for media relations,

communications strategy and co-ordinating the work of external agencies

across the region.

UPS uses Edelman and its affiliates in most of Europe, except Germany

where it retains ABC Eurocom Corporate and PR Dusseldorf.

Couplan said she has no immediate plans to review the use of agencies or

increase the in-house PR staff, although she was keen to ’maximise the

technology input’ of the department. She added that she would also work

closely with advertising and direct marketing teams in developing UPS’

corporate identity.

Couplan worked for Emirates for four-and-a-half years at the head of a

three-strong PR division.
