DIARY: Milking the X Files phenomenon for all it’s worth

The best-laid PR plans - along with several aliens - recently crash landed in Milton Keynes.

The best-laid PR plans - along with several aliens - recently crash

landed in Milton Keynes.

Spec Communications let extra-terrestrials loose in the town as a

publicity stunt to promote client BT Cable Services’ new Sci-Fi Channel.

After making the said aliens mysteriously appear and disappear around

Milton Keynes for a fortnight, Spec planned a photo-shoot of the ETs and

the famous concrete cows with BT Cable Services PR manager David

Pincott.

However, so bemused were passing motorists to see Independence Day come

to Buckinghamshire that two of them crashed into each other.

Spec account director Andrew Durkin, who says it was just a minor

accident with no injuries, tells me ruefully: ‘It just goes to show you

really can’t plan for every eventuality - especially when you’re dealing

with aliens.’
