Ex-Asda boss Christine Watts appointed head of communications for Waitrose

Waitrose has appointed former Asda PR boss Christine Watts as its head of communications.

New signing: Waitrose
New signing: Waitrose

Industry stalwart Watts joins with a substantial pedigree in the retail sector, having been Asda's director of corporate affairs from 1996 to 2005. Most recently, she was director of comms at Selfridges.
She has also worked as corporate communications manager at National and Provincial Building Society.
Watts replaces Dara Grogan, who left the business in June to pursue other opportunities. Grogan had been with Waitrose for two and a half years.
Grogan was formerly EMEA comms manager at Burger King. At Burger King Grogan took responsibility for the fast-food giant's stance on obesity in Britain.
Waitrose's sales grew 10.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to 9 August - almost twice as much as the grocery sector's average of 5.6 per cent.
The CBI revealed last week that retail sales have dropped for the fourth month running, although it said optimism among retailers was picking up.
The CBI's monthly snapshot of the retail sector showed that a balance of 16 per cent of retailers reported sales had fallen rather than risen compared to the same month last year.
Last August, Waitrose hired 3 Monkeys Communications to provide regional PR support to position itself as the 'local' neighbourhood supermarket across England and Wales.
Watts was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
