David Campbell Bannerman, former special adviser to Sir Patrick

Mayhew, has been made head of corporate affairs at the Association of

Train Operating Companies (ATOC).

ATOC represents the UK’s 25 passenger train operating companies and is

responsible for railcard promotion and the National Rail Enquiry

Service.

’The key challenge for me will be to create a new high profile and

positive role for the passenger rail industry,’ he said. ’There has been

a lot of unfair criticism of the railways and they have been the butt of

a fair amount of ridicule.’

Campbell Bannerman will report to ATOC director general James Gordon and

is planning to expand the two-strong PR department.

In July, ATOC appointed Powerhouse to promote its railcards and in May

it hired Westminster Strategy to handle Government liaison.
