DIARY: There’s methodology in this Soho madness

Next to the meaning of life, the question keeping most PR folk awake at nights must surely be: ‘Where in Soho do you get the besthouse champagne?’

Next to the meaning of life, the question keeping most PR folk awake at

nights must surely be: ‘Where in Soho do you get the besthouse

champagne?’

Now, praise be, one need puzzle no longer for this week, courtesy of

Handel Communications chief Kleshna Handel, the Diary can reveal the

best bet for bubbly.

In what must have been a bout of sheer altruism, Handel and client Sue

Aitken, of ad agency Barker and Ralston, set off with a measuring jug

and assessed seven different Soho joints for the price, taste and

measure size of their house champagne.

Topping the champers chart was Soho, Soho, which charged pounds 3.75 for

a 150ml glass of Heidsieck Dry Monopole and, according to our

independent assessors, had a corking atmosphere.

Scraping the bottom of the magnum was Est which - can you credit it? -

had no house champagne on the shelves and The Atlantic Bar and Grill

which, as well as being crowded, charged pounds 6 for a 130ml shot of

Louis Roederer NV.

Handel, who insists she was still standing by the end of the evening,

says she has no plans to give up PR for the life of a hostelry reviewer.

However she tells me: ‘We had a very good methodology and I think we

could replicate it with something else. Perhaps we could do prawn

sandwiches next.’
