The reality show that sparked many a short-lived celebrity career will be screened for the final time next year. Channel 4 has a £180m three-year deal with production company Endemol taking it into 2010.

Celebrity Big Brother, which saw the highly controversial race row between Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty in 2007, will also have one last series next January.

Ratings for the show, which launched the careers of Goody, Kate Lawler and Alison Hammond, have been in steady decline in recent years. The recent series of Big Brother was the least watched so far.

James Matheson, associate director at Braben, believes the UK has finally become tired of ‘everyday people' achieving wealth and fame, just by appearing on a reality show. ‘It was PR gold dust to associate your brand with any member of the Big Brother house. It could guarantee a lot of column inches.'

‘This has ebbed away in favour of our current obsession with talent shows - witness Susan Boyle this year,' he added.
