At 1am last Friday Eaton rushed his heavily pregnant wife, Rachel, to
hospital after she began to feel contractions. However the couple were
sent home after hospital staff decided the birth was still some way
Back at the house, Rachel took a bath and things started to speed up
Eaton rang the hospital and rushed straight back to help his wife. Their
daughter, Freya, was born at 4.30 am, delivered single-handedly by Eaton
after the midwife and ambulance had failed to arrive. They had gone to
the couple’s old address, vacated a month previously, and only appeared
at 5am, just in time to cut the umbilical cord.
A shell-shocked Eaton still managed to make it to the office for a 9am
meeting with two clients and a gaggle of trade journalists. Vital
account handler Laurence Phillips, who has rung me to nominate Eaton as
boss of the year, observes: ’He was a little bit ashen, I have to say.’
