The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has named Fran
Michelman, former head of Mobil Oil Corporation’s international arts and
sports sponsorship, as its vice-president for public relations.
The ATP is the governing body of the men’s world tennis tour, of which
Pete Sampras is the current number one.
Michelman will be responsible for developing the tour’s image outside
the dedicated tennis media. She will also oversee other functions of the
tour including its corporate communications, creative services and
Michelman will join current PR vice-president Graeme Agars to spearhead
the tour’s communications and public relations worldwide. Agars will now
become the vice-president of the ATP tour’s newly created communications
and media relations portfolio.
He said: ’Fran will be taking the message of tennis across the normal
parameters, from business magazines to consumer magazines like GQ.’
Michelman and Agars will be responsible for around 120 members of staff
who cover over 70 events worldwide.
Michelman has worked as a consultant to the US Track and Field
Federation and the ATP tour’s own London-based agency, Championship
Her professional background also covers spells in advertising,
marketing, television production and contract negotiation and
sponsorship. She has also authored a book on this subject.
Larry Scott, the ATP Tour chief operating officer said: ’Fran is a very
welcome addition to the ATP tour team. She brings with her a broad
experience in areas of public relations, promotion and sports
