Diary: Washing machines enter a new cycle as Electrolux thinks big about wash day

If most of us have trouble marrying up two pairs of socks after a weekly wash, spare a thought for the poor soul charged with emptying the P36-18.

If most of us have trouble marrying up two pairs of socks after a

weekly wash, spare a thought for the poor soul charged with emptying the

P36-18.

According to manufacturer Electrolux, the catchily-named P36-18 is the

biggest washing machine in the world, capable of washing 7,000 sheets,

8,000 shirts or 28,000 pairs of socks each hour.

To help launch the 14 metre-long monster, Electrolux is looking to link

up with a charity for some type of washing-based fund-raising event.

’Just on its own, the washing machine isn’t that interesting,’ Isobel

Norwell, Electrolux’s head of corporate communications, admits

candidly.

’But we thought if we could find a fun angle it might add some

interest.’
