Opinion: From our Readers - House of Lords is open to the media

Your article on the House of Lords Information Committee's report Are the Lords listening? (News, 24 July 2009) quotes the Hansard Society's evidence calling for greater access for specialist journalists to attend debates, committees and briefings.

In fact, this already happens: all Lords' business both in the Chamber and committees is publicised to political, regional and relevant specialist press and is open to both public and press to attend. In the last complete session there was a 60 per cent increase in coverage of Lords debates in print and online media.

Journalists not able to attend in person can watch online at parliamentlive.tv.

While some select committee evidence sessions are audio only, most are broadcast live. This will be expanded further after the summer recess.

Owen Williams, head of press and media, House of Lords.
