MEDIA: What the Papers say; Diana’s theatre performance baffles critics

Sir Magdi Yacoub should take the rap - it was he who invited Diana to attend the operation knowing that Sky TV was going to have cameras there. He hoped it would increase the profile of the charity.

If the episode was intended to reinforce Diana’s ‘Queen of Hearts’

image, public reaction was for once critical, which may show the

pendulum is swinging even further away from the Princess’ side. It also

gave Claire Rayner and Julia Carling the chance to stick the scalpel

firmly into Di’s back. Little support was evident from the medical

profession (Magdi Yacoub excepted). Editorial comment was also biased

against Diana. The Mail on Sunday floated the idea that it was a

deliberate effort by Diana to scupper the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer

in which Julia Carling was prominent.

The whole episode made a mockery of the recent appointment of Jane

Atkinson as the Princess’ PR. With Atkinson in America, the doctor and

the Princess contrived to turn the whole affair into a very messy

operation.
