BBC News has appointed Michele Grant as controller of media and PR

as the first step in a restructuring which is likely to pare down the

division’s communications department.

The top communications post at BBC News, which oversees all news

programmes, was previously held by Richard Peel, controller of marketing

and communication.

He left the BBC to become director of corporate affairs for the England

and Wales Cricket Board in January.

Under the new structure marketing functions will be handled by head of

strategy Richard Deverell. Grant’s remit in the 35-strong department

will include media relations, programme publicity and public affairs.

She was previously head of marketing communications for the BBC’s

international news services. Grant will introduce three new posts: head

of PR, head of media relations and head of publicity. A new structure

will follow.

’We expect to reduce the number of people in-house and resource more

activity from outside agencies,’ said Grant.
