UMIST, the Manchester-based university for science and technology,

has begun the search for its first director of external relations and

communications.

The post has been created as a result of the retirements next September

of the current information director, Tim Yates, and development director

Bland Tomkinson.

The person appointed to the new role will head a nine-strong division in

the secretary and registrar’s department.

Yate’s remit has included responsibility for all printed and web

material produced by the university in its drive to recruit students, as

well as dealing with media relations. Tomkinson’s role has focused on

fund-raising and alumni relations.

’We are aware that British universities have not fostered alumni

relations as much as they might, not so much as a fund-raising source

but as a network of contacts,’ said Yates.

UMIST is a research oriented university with 6,400 students. It is rated

number six nationally by the Higher Education Funding Council.
