Lords urged to open doors to the media

A House of Lords committee has called for the Chamber to step into the 21st century by using YouTube and building relations with local media.

The Lords information committee suggested that members of the House should break with tradition and upload their contributions to proceedings to YouTube.

The committee's report, Are the Lords listening? Creating connections between people and Parliament, also called for information sessions for press gallery members and links with journalism courses.

The report is intended to improve transparency. It says both Houses' reputations are 'at a low point' after media coverage of peers' allowances and MPs' expenses.

The Hansard Society has called for the Lords to go further in providing better access for specialist journalists. Chief executive Fiona Booth said: 'Most press gallery journalists are general political correspondents. We would urge that greater access should be provided for specialist journalists to attend debates, committees and briefings relevant to their speciality.'

The society also suggested that the House establish a regional press system, with Lords being invited to engage with media in specific parts of the country.
