PUBLIC SECTOR: Mayes takes PR helm at epilepsy society

The National Society for Epilepsy (NSE) has appointed Barry Mayes as communications director. Mayes joins the NSE from Hertfordshire Borough Council, where he was communications manager. He will head a two-strong press team appointed this summer (PR Week, 25 June) and report to chief executive Douglas Bennett. He replaces Judith Cranfield, who left in December 1998. The charity’s work with Grayling will be partly wound down in the wake of Mayes’ appointment and the installation of an in-house PR department. Grayling has worked with the NSE for around three years and provided press office support through a period of staff changes precipitated by PR manager Jo Lawrence-King’s departure. Grayling will be retained by the NSE to carry out ad hoc project work and advise Bennett and Mayes on communications strategy.
