Opinion: From our Readers - NLA online charging is not a bad move ..

The unanimous condemnation of the NLA's plans to charge for web coverage was unsurprising (News, 26 June). Of course, self-interest is a powerful motive. But aren't we in danger of appearing like MPs and their expenses? We have been playing the system and exploiting free content within the rules, but the system is cracked: it can't go on forever.

The advertising collapse means we can no longer expect free access to content - at home or at work. And with some of the biggest global news organisations making noises about charging for some or all of their editorial content online, the whole idea of free news content on the web is in for serious review.

NLA has timed an unpopular move to coincide with a possible turning of the tide.
