Public Affairs: Lobbying Target - Greg Barker, shadow environment minister

The millionaire Surrey MP had a spell in financial PR before entering the Commons.

Ten-second biography

Elected as MP for Bexhill and Battle in 2001. A self-made millionaire, Barker was appointed to the Tory front bench in 2003 as a whip and was made shadow environment minister in December 2005 after the election of David Cameron as Conservative Party leader.

Educated at grammar school in Sussex and London University. After graduating, he went to the Centre for Policy Studies think-tank and then spent ten years working in the City, including a spell as associate partner at Brunswick.

Where does he sit politically?

Barker is seen to be broadly supportive of Cameron's political agenda.

Is he one to watch?

Barker is said to be close to Cameron's inner circle, but he may have to wait for promotion following recent embarrassing headlines. In 2006, his private life was splashed across the papers and, more recently, he was deeply embroiled in the MPs' expenses scandal.

Something I might not have known

Barker has served in the Territorial Army.
