This brand’s history began with Dr Saloman Neumann, a Czech boffin who
arrived in England in 1933 with a doctorate in technical science.
After trying various jobs, he approached Norman Shand Kydd with a
process he had already patented and installed in German wallpaper
factories. He was appointed as a consultant and launched his most famous
product in 1953 which, based on water-soluble cellulose, proved an
instant success with decorators.
The name he chose for the product still brands the company - although
this sub-brand was not launched till 1954, two years before this pack
would have been on sale. With plaster its main constitutent, it is very
much the same product today and was last advertised two years ago.
If you can name it, call the hotline on 0800 106011 - it’s not a
terribly difficult one, but you’ll get a tick, as well as the customary
champagne, if you are the first to get it right.
Shirley Parnell of Sun Alliance Connections correctly identified
Smarties last week. Congratulations - the bubbly’s on its way.
