Public Affairs: The week in lobbying

Portland has signed up Conservative parliamentary candidate Charlotte Leslie.

As revealed on (1 June), Leslie starts this week as an education associate. She is a former policy adviser to shadow cabinet minister David Willetts and previously worked for Policy Exchange's education research practice. Leslie is the Tory candidate for Bristol North West - a key target for the Tories in the next election.

Hanover has hired Cicero Consulting staffer Michael Cooper as a senior consultant in its financial services practice. Cooper specialises in financial services policy in the EU, having previously worked for the CBI in Brussels. He is the second Cicero Consulting staffer to switch to Hanover in recent months, after Laura Chisholm joined last year as an account director.

The Whitehouse Consultancy has objected to plans for self-regulation of the public affairs industry. Senior lobbyists recently produced an 'issues paper' to pave the way for a single umbrella group. In a formal response this week, Whitehouse said: 'Despite goodwill among many organisations, we remain so far from having consensus on the points covered in the issues paper that it would be premature to establish a timetable for creating a public affairs council.'
