Ten-second biography

Elected as MP for Welwyn Hatfield in 2005, Shapps has risen quickly up the ranks. In December 2007, he was made vice-chairman of Conservative Party campaigning. He was elevated to his current role in June 2007 and has thrown himself into it – even sleeping rough one Christmas Eve to draw attention to the issue of homelessness.

What’s his background?

Shapps was born and educated in Hertfordshire, attending Watford Grammar School. He studied business at Manchester Polytechnic and went on to set up his own printing company at the age of 21.

Where does he sit politically?

In many ways a model Cameroon, Shapps combines a keen interest inentrepreneurship with a genuine commitment to social justice.

Is he one to watch?

Shapps is seen by many Tories as a youthful and energetic presence in the shadow cabinet. However, some senior Tories believe Shapps will need to develop more gravitas if he is to land a key role in a David Cameron government.

Something I may not have known
