Davis defends her expenses

Birmingham City Council comms director Deborah Davis has defended her actions after a local paper accused her of using a taxpayer-funded credit card to spend £15,000 on foreign trips and entertaining in a year.

The Sunday Mercury used Freedom of Information requests to uncover expense claims filed by Davis, which included a £1,000 visit to a luxury hotel and top restaurant in her native Canada.

Davis insisted: ‘All my council-related expenses are modest – extraordinarily so for the director of comms of the largest authority in Europe. Any personal expenses incurred were reconciled and reimbursed in full on my return.’

Council chief executive Stephen Hughes also defended Davis, saying: ‘Part of her role is to network and make connections with people at home and abroad.’
