The factory farming system causes more environmental damage than transport, Friends of the Earth will claim today.

The NGO is launching a report that says over £700m public money spend on propping up factory farms annually. The report says this support fuels demand for imported animal feed from South American plantations created by clearing rainforests.

The group has persuaded MPs to ride a mechanical bucking bronco in front of Parliament this morning to show their support for planet-friendly farming. The stunt's message will read: ‘Buck the system, fix the food chain'. The event kicks off at 11.30am this morning.

Friends of the Earth is launching the report as part of its new Food Chain Campaign, which calls for urgent action to fix the food chain and reverse the long-term decline in small farms and the loss of 4000 jobs a year.

It will also lobby MPs to tackle the role of corporations, particularly supermarkets, in driving intensive farming by paying low prices to farmers.
