Voluntary Sector: The Week in Charities

The Parkinson's Disease Society has launched a campaign urging the public to donate their brains to research. The charity's president Jane Asher, journalist Jeremy Paxman and presenter John Stapleton are among a number of supporters pledging to donate their brains. The drive coincides with Parkinson's Disease Awareness Week, which takes place this week.

MeccaBingo.com, sponsor of rugby league team Wigan Warriors, is donating shirt sponsorship for the team's match against French team Catalans Dragons to Whizz-Kidz, its charity partner. The charity will benefit from the game being shown live on Sky Sports. The bingo firm has also asked the public to bring old mobile phones into clubs, with the money raised through recycling going to the charity.

The United Nations Convention Campaign Coalition, a coalition of 31 disability groups, is lobbying the UK Government to give disabled people equal citizenship. The Government wants to opt out of four areas of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, but the coalition will urge it to ratify the Convention in full.
