Economic slump hits UAE comms salaries

The dramatic slowdown of the Dubai economy will hit wages in the comms sector, according PRJS - a specialist PR recruitment agency in the region.

The firm said that whist salaries rose throughout 2008, it expects to see Dubai in-house salaries level out this year.

Its UAE PR Salary Guide stated: ‘Dubai has become a buyers market for employers, candidates wishing to remain in Dubai have relatively little choice but to accept what is on offer.'

The firm noted that Dubai agency salaries rose sharply during Q3 and Q4 2008, however the recent steadying of inflation and widespread redundancies have halted pay rises. Slowing retail and housing markets have also depressed salaries.

An agency account manager in the region can expect to earn between AED15-22k UAE Dirhams a month (£2.6-4.1k a month), while a regional managing director/CEO earns AED55-75k a month (£10.3-14.1K).

Wages remain higher in the private sector, with a director of communications in a government related post earning AED65-90k a month (£12.1-16.8k).

The outlook looks better for the comms industry in Abu Dhabi as a shortage of high calibre talent will see in-house and agency salaries rise during 2009, PRJS said.
