Newcastle considers local news venture, VisitBritain launches European campaign.

Newcastle City Council is in talks with the Newcastle Journal about investing in the local news group's online operation as a means of distributing its own news. The deal would allow the council to save money on developing its own news mechanism, while allowing it to be opened up for public use. The subject is covered further in a feature on local websites in this week's PRWeek Regional PR supplement.

London Transport Museum has appointed Four Communications to generate awareness of the Futures research project into flexible working, commuting and telecommunications. Four is handling PR and public affairs for the museum for two months. The team will report to London Transport Museum comms manager Wendy Neville.

The BBC has appointed Chris Atkinson as new media relations manager. He joins from his role as senior press officer at the Department for Communities and Local Government. Atkinson will report to chief press officer Katherine Grimes, and will run the main BBC press office desk on a rota basis.

VisitBritain has launched the European phase of its multi-million pound 'Britain for Less' campaign. Running until the end of June, it is the agency's largest campaign in Europe for several years with £1.8m invested across 18 countries.

The Local Government Association's programme director Edward Welsh goes head to head with the TaxPayers' Alliance's campaign director Mark Wallace in this week's podcast, in a debate over public sector pay. This follows the news that three comms directors are on a list of Britain's highest-earning council employees, compiled by the TaxPayers' Alliance.
