Ten-second biography

Elected in 1992 as the first ever Labour MP for Wallasey. She held a number of junior ministerial posts up until 2002 when she was demoted to the backbenches. Following her sacking she was elected as vice chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party. She re-entered government in her current role in 2007.

What’s her background?

Educated at Formby Comprehensive School and Oxford University, where she studied PPE. On leaving Oxford, Eagle worked for the trade union now known as Unison – as a researcher, press officer and then parliamentary liaison officer.

Where does she sit politically?

Seen as instinctively to the left of the leadership but is disciplined enough not to let it show.

Is she one to watch?

Eagle is seen as competent but may need to brush up her media skills if she is to climb any higher up the greasy pole. A recent lacklustre performance on Newsnight will not have helped her cause.

Something I may not have known

Eagle was joint winner of the British under-18s chess championship in 1976.
