Chelsea FC is making a fresh effort to communicate to fans with the launch of an official Twitter account, due to go live as PRWeek went to press.

Chelsea has acted in response to a number of fake Twitter accounts, purporting to be from the club. It becomes the second of the Premiership ‘big four’ clubs to add its official voice to Twitter – following in the footsteps of Liverpool.

Chelsea comms and public affairs chief Simon Greenberg said the tweets would be done under the name of the club’s mascot Stamford the Lion and the actual identity of the people behind the Twitter feed would remain a secret.

However, he said that Chelsea’s effort was unique because the account would be managed by those at ‘centre of the club’ rather than by the media team. Greenberg added: ‘If officials or players are doing the tweeting you’re getting deeper into the inner workings of the club.’
