Microsoft in new review

Microsoft is reviewing its US$4m global mobile PR business, putting incumbent Weber Shandwick on alert.

The pitch is the latest in a series of reviews by the software giant. In recent months it has reviewed its UK consumer business (PRWeek, 12 December 2008) and its consumer and b2b accounts in Europe (PRWeek, 27 March).

Sources told PRWeek the pitch document was released earlier this week. Weber Shandwick is expected to defend the brief against Microsoft’s other roster shops, Edelman and Waggener Edstrom.

Microsoft’s mobile communications business covers its mobile offering across a range of devices. Its most popular platform is Windows Mobile, which is present on several smartphone brands.  But a senior agency source claimed the company was unimpressed with the media cut-through achieved by Windows Mobile, compared with Google’s Android operating system and others such as Apple iPhone.

It is also believed the establishment of a new unit overseeing consumer and online over the past year has caused other Microsoft business groups to reassess their comms needs.
