Tom Curtin set up the political planning specialist Green Issues Communications in 1998, and sold it two years ago to a private equity firm.

He left his position as CEO in November, but is now launching the boutique Curtin&Co to focus on issues and crisis management.

Curtin said: 'Of course we still offer a service to the political property side, which is one of our specialisms, but my background in nuclear and water gives us expertise in crisis management too.'

Curtin was previously head of media relations at Thames Water Plc during its privatisation and head of corporate comms for the old nuclear decommissioning authority Nirex. He also teaches crisis management courses at the The International Institute of Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland.

The agency comprises Curtin and account executive Catherine Worboys, but it has access to a range of consultants. 'In today's market, one has to be prudent about over-loading the cost base, and we believe that associateships with other consultants is the way forward in the medium term,' he said.
