Darling appoints Jean-Christophe Gray as new spokesperson

The Treasury has appointed a new head of press and the chancellor's principal spokesperson.

Jean-Christophe Gray will act as the chancellor's key spokesperson on all economic and policy issues.

He is currently head of the Treasury's EU finances team and has previously held a range of other posts in the Treasury, including private secretary to the chancellor Alistair Darling.

Gray will take over from head of comms Steve Field as the chancellor's spokesperson. Field has been promoted to the role of director of strategy and communications, with overall responsibility for Treasury communications.
